2019 Community Partnership Grant

The History Center is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to preserve and encourage access to its unique collections, while designing learning experiences and services that create opportunities for people to learn about themselves and their place in the world.

Brianna Thompson, 2019 recipient of the Community Partnership Grant, will be working directly with The History Center developing programing for place-based educational initiatives. The newly re-located and re-designed History Center in the heart to the Commons aspires to engage people around the theme of “place-making” and “connecting-with-place.”

Thompson will combine her specialization in 19th and 20th century women's fiction with the goals of the partnership grant, examining a 1909 novel Tess of the Storm Country, about the squatters of Ithaca's historic "Silent City" and their interactions with the wealthy class. Thompson will be gathering oral histories of the Silent City, creating walking tours, and will be designing reading groups related to her project in addition to helping The History Center with other new place-based initiatives.
