Beginning June 21, will offer an online Summer Practicum focusing on this year's focal theme of Rural Black Lives.
The Summer Practicum is offered each summer to allow graduate students and advanced undergraduates to deepen public and engaged humanities projects in our local region that they have begun or are adequately prepared to undertake during an intensive 6-week program. The Practicum aims to make training in public humanities and community-centered academic work a central part of student education and career opportunities today. Projects should engage specifically with the theme of Rural Black Lives in our Upstate NY region.
Examples of successful online public humanities projects could involve digital storytelling, presentations and exhibitions shared over Zoom or otherwise online, documentaries, case studies, teaching materials, or print media.
The 2021 Summer Practicum will be led by Anna Sims Bartel, associate director for community-engaged curricula and practice for the Office of Engagement Initiatives, and Gerard Aching, professor of Africana Studies and Romance Studies.
Participants in the Summer Practicum will each be awarded a grant of up to $8,000 for their work, $6,000 of which is set aside for the participant's living expenses during the 6-week program. See our Application Guidelines for more information and instructions.
